10 Banned Foods
The authorities of several countries decided that some foods are illegal because of the substances contained by those, or simply because of bad legislation. While in China, you can eat a living octopus knowing that you can die if you don’t chew it well, and nobody has a problem with that, there are also other countries that are more interested about the health of their citizens, therefore they banned many foods. Today, we will talk about the usual foods which are forbidden in some parts of the world because of some weird reasons.
1. Ketchup
The common Ketchup is discussed in France, not because it is dangerous, but because it affects the reputation and recognition of the traditional French tomato sauces. Ketchup is banned in French schools, but the ban might apply everywhere in France soon.
2. Kinder Eggs
You can buy a Kinder egg in USA, but you can’t bring it from Mexico! While the US law does not forbid the Kinder surprises, the US Customs and Border protection can’t allow Kinder eggs imports, because they contain “non nutritive objects”. Therefore, Kinder eggs are made in USA, but they can’t be imported.
3. Marmite
The Marmite is forbidden in Denmark because it is fortified with vitamins. Apparently, Denmark has something against vitamins, although the Danish people are some of the healthiest in the world.
4. Akee fruits
The Jamaican fruit can’t be imported in USA because of the toxins contained by the product. Well, the Jamaicans like it very much, and those concerns might not be justified, as long as nobody died from an Akee overdose.
5. Jelly sweets
Not all the jelly sweets are banned in the European Union, but only those made with konjac. They are supposed to pose a choking hazard, but the Japanese and Eastern Asians that like konjac jellies don’t complain about it.
6. Haggis
Haggis are traditional foods in Scotland, but they are banned in USA because of the sheep lungs used to make those. The Scotland authorities invited the US officials to see how the haggis are made, and to resume imports.
7. Samosas
The samosas are spicy snacks from Somalia which were popular in other countries also. However, when the Somalia military police considered them “too Christian”, they were banned from production.
8. Raw milk
Although our ancestors lived with raw milk for millenniums, we are forbidden from this delight. In USA and Canada, it is forbidden to consume milk that was not pasteurized, although people living in Africa, Europe and Asia say that it is one of the healthiest things to drink.
9. Horse meat
It is a little weird because eating horse meat is not illegal in US and UK, but it is illegal to slaughter the animals. In other words, if you are caught eating horse meat, the authorities can’t fine you, but they can ask who slaughtered the horse so you could enjoy your steak. Some organizations want the law to be revised. The French restaurants say that horse meat is delicatessen, so they want it back in the menus. Legally.
10. Absinthe
The absinthe was banned in USA and Europe because it contains wormwood, a dangerous plant that can induce hallucinations. However, the absinthe drinks become more and more popular, even if the usage of the substance is technically illegal.
