Official data says that Europe, Asia and Northern America are the continents with the biggest life duration. On average, citizens of San Marino, Switzerland and Andorra live more than 80 years, but also the people from Japan, Australia or New Zealand.

At the opposite pole, there are the African countries where people live on average to the age of 50. In South Africa, the average life span is 49 years, while in Nigeria and Uganda, the life expectation is 52 years.

What factors affect the life span?

The rhythm and the form of aging are two different concepts, and this is why it is important to make a difference between the life duration and the quality of life.

Living an intense but short life is a concept that characterizes the lifestyle. The speed of metabolism is connected with the life duration of humans. this theory is accepted, but it is also controversial.

Certain organisms live a short life, strictly connected with the level of metabolism. Humans have a slow metabolism; this is why their life duration is one of the biggest amongst all mammals. The singing birds on the other hand have a fast metabolism, and this brings the average life span of those to 2-3 years.

On the other hand, the way of aging describes the way mortality (the risk of decease) is modified as we grow old.

In Sweden, only 2 young girls out of 100 000 die before the age of 15, but only one woman out of 100 000 dies after the age of 100. This difference of mortality from the beginning to the end of life shows that the aging curve is faster for some mammals, while for others, it is slower. For some species, the risk of dying decreases with age. This is the case of turtles, alligators and crocodiles. An older animal is a smarter one, therefore it will live longer!

On the other hand, when it comes to humans, as long as there are not the dangers of the jungle that affects the life span, the calculations need to be modified. However, as we make differences between animals when it comes to the life span, we also need to make a difference when it comes to humans.

The average life duration almost doubled during the last two centuries. The increased safety and the medical advancements are to be praised for that. However, the quality of life is a different matter. Some people can live for 100 years without being happy, while others that die at 50 years old feel satisfied with what they have done in life.

Even so, it is important to live longer, to see your grandchildren and to be proud of your accomplishments.
