The First Trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk Drops Plenty of Bombs

The first extended trailer for writer-director Christopher Nolan’s World War II epic Dunkirk has arrived, and–as with so many of Nolan’s films–it promises no shortage of drama, derring-do, and more than a few dark nights. Based on the infamous 1940 Dunkirk evacuation, in which more than 300,000 Allied soldiers were rescued from a Nazi offensive in little more than a week, the film stars previous Nolan collaborators Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy, as well as Kenneth Branagh and recent Oscar-winner Mark Rylance.

Based on the first glimpse, expect plenty of battles by land and by sea, as well as lots of shots of well-respected English actors staring forlornly at the sky. We’ll see what they see when Dunkirk opens July 21st.
