Big-budget Spider-Man spectacles have had a hard time lately: First, there was the strange semi-fiasco of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark, the absurdly expensive Broadway show that closed after just three years (we never saw it, but the leaked footage looked amazing!) Then there was 2014’s way too crowded Amazing Spider-Man 2, the lowest-grossing of the modern Spider-Man movies, and a disappointment to pretty much all involved.
So there’s a lot riding on next summer’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, the first teaser for which just debuted online. Starring The Impossible’s Tom Holland–who made his in-costume debut in this summer’s Captain America: Civil War–and co-written and directed by Cop Car’s Jon Watts, Homecoming focuses on Peter Parker’s high school life, which is upended when his web-slinging career takes off. As the new teaser proves, Parker’s new gig not only brings about a new costume and a unexpected benefactor-slash-mentor in Tony Stark (played by Robert Downey Jr., of course), it also draws the ire of a new villain: Michael Keaton’s Vulture, seen here starting at about a minute-and-a-half in. Will Spider-Man manage to vanquish not only his teenage insecurities and his latest foe? Or will he simply tune out, turn off the dark, and try to live the life of a normal high-schooler? We’ll find out when Spider-Man: Homecoming opens July 7.
