This week we got news about the disposition of the current cinematic Superman (he’s not dark, just relatable, it turns out) and about the moods of the Suicide Squad cast (they’re sort of sad about their lost scenes). But given the DC-centric focus of recent installments, let’s put both of them to one side for a second and give Marvel, Sony, and Fox some air time. Here, dear patient readers, are the highlights of the last seven days’ worth of superhero movie news.
SUPER IDEA: Tiny Teases from Thor
All manner of photos are coming from the Brisbane set of Thor: Raganrok, teasing plot details for the third Asgardian-centric movie from Marvel Studios. Not only does Anthony Hopkins’ Odin seemingly return as a hobo on the streets of New York, but Chris Hemsworth is Instragramming newspaper headline spoilers. (Who has died in “Time Square”? Why is Thor attacking people? Who is “Lady Justice”?) Also, someone is suggesting that Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange might be making an appearance in the movie as well.
Why this is super: The fascinating thing about all these rumors is how disconnected they are from what we thought we knew about the movie. Where are the alien gladiators and Hulk cameos? What if everything we thought we knew about Ragnarok is wrong?
SUPER IDEA: Captain Marvel Hitting the Big Screen Sooner Than You Expected
She missed her chance to debut in 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, but now it’s being teased that Captain Marvel could show up on the big screen ahead of her own solo movie, with Joe and Anthony Russo saying she might appear in 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War. After offering a hint that a new character will show up in the movie, which will also apparently feature the Guardians of the Galaxy, Anthony said that the possibility that it’ll be Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel was “one we’re going to have to plead the fifth on.”
Why this is super: If nothing else, it now makes a little more sense why Marvel announced Larson’s casting a few weeks ago at Comic-Con International. Her solo movie isn’t coming until 2019, but if she’s going to be in Infinity War then the role got cast just in time to start production.
SUPER IDEA: Baby Groot! Baby Groot!
Speaking of Guardians of the Galaxy, there’s some newly-released concept art from next year’s Vol. 2 that shows the team dealing with a giant, multi-tentacled monster. It’s unclear whether or not this monster will show up in the movie, but one thing in the image that’ll definitely play a large part in the film is the adorable Baby Groot in the bottom left of the picture. Look at how much fun he seems to be having! Who doesn’t think that we’ve just found the most toy-ready new hero of them all?
Why this is super: We can’t even snark. Just look at how lovable that little guy is. Just look!
SUPER IDEA: Zendaya Playing Mary Jane Watson
Even as the cast continues to grow, one of the secrets of Spider-Man: Homecoming’s massive ensemble has been revealed: Zendaya will be playing Mary Jane Watson, the main love interest in the movie. The character, whose name has been listed as “Michelle” on call sheets for the movie, was originally intended to have her true identity be one of the movie’s reveals before the Internet stepped in last week. Of course, there was sadly a vocal minority who had trouble with the casting, using the dog whistle complaint that MJ has to be “red-haired,” but both Guardians of the Galaxy’s James Gunn and MJ co-creator Stan Lee have spoken out in favor of the news.
Why this is super: Sure, the haters are going to hate, but as long as Zendaya can play an independent, strong, and optimistic MJ, this is just great news.
SUPER IDEA: Wolverine’s Last Shave
It’s the end of an era… and if Hugh Jackman is to be believed, this video of him shaving off his Wolverine sideburns is the last time he’ll ever do it, because this’ll be the last time he’s ever going to play the role.
My wife is going to be very happy. #GoodbyeChops #thedebs
Oh, facial hair. We hardly knew you, aside from those nine movies you were in.
Why this is super: OK, super might be pushing it, but we do love watching Jackman use social media so well.
