“Not everyone is wired for what you’re about to do,” someone warns translator Dr. Louise Banks (Amy Adams) in the trailer for Arrival, the forthcoming aliens-have-landed thriller from Sicario director Denis Villeneuve. Banks’ mission? To communicate with the inhabitants of a 1,500-foot-high, free-floating spaceship that’s just materialized over a giant patch of green somewhere in the world. Every 18 hours, the door to the jellybean-shaped ship opens up–giving Banks and her colleagues (played by Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker) the chance to try to learn why the outer-space carpetbaggers are here in the first place. But just as Banks’ connection to the alien critters is beginning to deepen, more ships begin to appear around the globe–setting off a panic among world leaders, who must decide whether to take on the visitors, or perhaps even each other. It’s up to her to keep the peace, and to figure out what the aliens are saying (hey, no big pressure there!) We’ll see if Dr. Banks is up to the task when Arrival opens Nov. 11.
Pause at: 1:20, when one of the starfish-looking starship-dwellers gives an awkward hello.
