A new trailer for this winter’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story has arrived. And trust us: The Force is strong with this one.
In the two-plus-minute clip, which premiered during tonight’s Rio Olympics telecast, we get not only Director Orson Krenic (Ben Mendelsohn) and his Death Troopers, but also a glimpse of Mr. Dark Side himself, Darth Vader. (There’s also a lot of stressed-out running and rebels in handcuffs.)
As we learned from the AT-ATastic teaser trailer that debuted earlier this year, Rogue One follows a young outcast and thief named Jyn Ergo (played by Oscar-nominated The Theory of Everything star Felicity Jones) as she joins the Rebel Alliance in their mission to take down the still-in-development Death Star. We all know how that turned out, of course, but Rogue One’s mission is to give that backstory the cinematic treatment.
Rogue One is directed by Gareth Edwards, who last brought you the 2014 version of Godzilla, and whose ensemble cast also includes Oscar winner Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland), Diego Luna (Milk), Riz Ahmed (HBO’s The Night Of), Donnie Yen (Ip Man), and Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal). It’s the first in a series of spinoff stories that will exist within the Star Wars universe, but take place between or before the episodically titled Star Wars films. A Han Solo stand-alone film, which will follow the smuggler in his early years, is expected in 2018, and will star Hail, Ceasar! stand-out Alden Ehrenreich.
