Day three of the Olympics was an exciting one. Ibtihaj Muhammad became the first Team USA athlete to compete wearing a hijab. Frigin’ ping pong turned out to be remarkably exciting. And Michael Phelps’s became the proud subject of the 2016 Olympics’ first meme.
And it is the perfect followup to 2012’s meme-megahit “McKayla Maroney Is Not Impressed.”
What #Rio2016 meme will emerge to succeed the 2012 Olympics’ most lasting meme, “McKayla Maroney is not impressed”? pic.twitter.com/aaNL05Hjk9

You asked, Ryan, and Phelps answered.
While waiting in the holding room before the men’s 200 meter butterfly semifinals, the world-renowned USA swimmer, donning a hoodie and headphones, shot the kind of glares at his opponent Chad le Clos that could dim the sun and set the atmosphere aflame. Perhaps it was just his game face, or perhaps he was unamused by le Clos dancing in front of him. Either way, the Internet took note immediately and the #PhelpsFace meme was born.
Here are some of the best reactions to #PhelpsFace from around the Internet.

Phelps’ masterful side-eye worked. Moments after making the face that launched a thousand takes, he advanced to the finals with the second-fastest run of the semis.
